The Top Hat is pleased to announce our new partnership with the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival. Starting Monday May 20, the Top Hat will be showing our first documentary film. Moving forward, we will continue with a Big Sky Documentary Film every third Monday of the month.

Our first film will be Ain’t In It for My Health: A Film About Levon Helm. It will start at 8:00PM.

Top Hat Relaunches the Weekly Picking Circle

Starting Tuesday May 14, the Top Hat is bringing back the Picking Circle (A long Top Hat tradition).

From 6PM to 8PM every Tuesday, bluegrass-oriented musicians are invited to come down to the Top Hat and jam in the raised seating area in front of the sound booth. Right after the weekly pick jam, the Top Hat will have string-oriented bands play for the evening.

On the first Tuesday (MAY 14), the lil’ Smokies will kick of the music at 9:00, followed by Spirit Family Reunion at 10:00.

Should kick-off a great weekly music event.

Comedian Steve-O Performing Four Shows at the Top Hat

The Top Hat will be hosting comedian Steve-O for four shows at the Top Hat on May 10 and May 11.

Steve-O made a name for himself with his JACKASS video series. MTV aired the first season of JACKASS in 2000. In 2001, Steve-O launched his own “Steve-O Don’t Try This At Home Tour”, establishing himself as an accomplished stage performer, at venues throughout the U.S. and in a dozen countries.

When the JACKASS TV series ended in 2002, the team moved on to JACKASS: THE MOVIE, released by Paramount in October of that year. Shortly thereafter, Steve-O and fellow JACKASS alum, Chris Pontius, were given a spin-off show entitled WILDBOYZ, which aired on MTV and MTV2 and lasted four seasons. In 2006, Paramount released JACKASS: NUMBER 2 in theatres and Steve-O continued to thrill audiences with his outrageous stunts.

In 2009 he competed on ABC’s hit show, DANCING WITH THE STARS, and lasted six weeks, despite an injury and having virtually no dancing ability whatsoever.

Next up, Steve-O can be seen in Paramount’s release of JACKASS: 3D, which hits theatres on October 15, 2010. Thus far (and still counting), his career as a performer has brought him to a total of 38 countries.

Wailin’ Jennys

The Wailin’ Jennys are playing the Hat on July 25. In 2004, The Wailin’ Jennys released their first full-length album 40 Days in the to great critical acclaim, and in 2005 it won them a Juno Award (Canadian Grammy) for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year. Bolstered by their frequent appearances on Garrison Keillor’s public radio show A Prairie Home Companion, The Jennys exploded onto the roots music scene, performing at packed venues across the Canada, the U.S. and throughout the world. Their next CD Firecracker was a powerful follow-up to their debut album and found The Jennys stepping out of the folk realm and into the world of alt-country, pop and rock. Garnering much attention, it was nominated for a Juno Award and won a 2007 Folk Alliance Award for “Contemporary Release of the Year.” It charted for over 56 weeks on the Billboard charts and was followed up by their 2009 release Live at Mauch Chunk Opera House, which also spent over a year on the Billboard bluegrass charts. It captured the magic of their live performances with show-stopping harmonies, impressive instrumental prowess, breathtaking songs and witty stage banter. In 2011, The Wailin’ Jennys joined the ranks of Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris, recording their new studio album Bright Morning Stars with award-winning producer Mark Howard. Co-produced by frequent Jennys collaborator and Juno Award-nominated David Travers-Smith, the album combines fresh and innovative sounds with the band’s signature harmonies–a perfect mix of Americana, pop and traditional folk that is certain to be an instant classic. In March 2012, Bright Morning Stars won the Jennys their second Juno for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year.

Monday Night Movies at the Top Hat

Starting on Monday, March 25, the Top Hat will be offering “Monday Night Movies at the Top Hat.” This unique weekly event will include a “classic” movie on the Top Hat’s new 16’ high definition movie system. Moviegoers will be able to enjoy cocktails, beer, wine and food while enjoying great movies. Monday Night Movies at the Top Hat will provide Missoula with a one-of-a-kind movie experience.
